Baby hop into the ride, I ain’t got much time I don’t wanna give you the run around I get an engine that roars and a bass that booms We can outrun every cop in town Tomorrow isn’t promised, but today we go this Moment in our hands to deliver the chance And make it better than right now You gave it all your heart and everything you had And vowed never again To give it over to the promise of a city That never loved you back The ground forever keeps the toll, the truth is for who dares to hold And you know, you can’t go it alone Once again I’m asking for your hand to hold And tell me it’ll be alright When it feels like it won’t Even when This fight leads to the unknown Standin’ by your side Feels like home I take the wheel, turn the key We both can feel this open road is speakin’ to us So loud and clear, we’re breakin’ free Remindin’ this whole city that these streets are ours I can’t wait to know a world with you We’ll paint it bold With all the colors that they told us would never add up So while they’re advertisin’ opportunity for tomorrow. Tomorrow. I tell’em it’s today or never and I’m not waitin’ for time to borrow The first name is “I am” and the last name is “somebody” If you ever need help remindin’ them you know that you got me. Once again I’m asking for your hand to hold And tell me it’ll be alright When it feels like it won’t Even when This fight leads to the unknown Standin’ by your side Feels like home Can you hear me now Can you hear me now Can you hear us now Can you hear us now Can you see me now Can you see me now Can you see us now Can you see us now Once again I’m asking for your hand to hold And tell me it’ll be alright When it feels like it won’t Even when This fight leads to the unknown Standin’ by your side Feels like home

about

Baptized in a New Orleans kitchen sink, named after a man who led the first successful slave rebellion post-Trans Atlantic slave trade, and raised by two activist parents who were called to the streets of the Crescent City to protest the Vietnam War, Toussaint Morrison’s life journey was set before he had a say in it. However, at the age of 4 he’d take a sudden move to the frozen tundra of Minneapolis by way of his parent’s divorce finding himself playing toy instruments alongside his grandfather, a professional jazz trombonist. Years later, shuffling through his father’s tape collection during road trips to visit family in Detroit, Morrison was given a makeshift intro to Ice Cube’s AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted… and, as an adolescent between entirely different worlds and conditions he never asked for, began writing.

After a storied music career and touring for years, Morrison surfaces a new album, The Very Best of Ricky & Jane, name-dropping his parents in the title with a fleur de lis emblazoned on the cover in solidarity with his birthplace in the Big Easy. The Very Best touts tracks such as ALL SAINTS that tip a cap to his late grandfather who introduced him to playing an instrument, and his Detroit-born father who taught him how to speak at rallies. Following with RIOTS WORK, a metallic street ballad to his involvement in the uprising of his home city of Minneapolis, protesting police brutality and other forms of white supremacy throughout two long years of community action on the heels of police murdering yet another Black man in public with seeming impunity. This new body of work highlights the dichotomy of Morrison’s upbringing, celebrating a life of music and damn good trouble.
