When Daunte Wright, a 20 year-old Black man, was shot and killed by Kim Potter, a Brooklyn Center police officer, Toussaint Morrison attended and spoke at numerous rallies demanding justice for the young man. In making the nightly trips to hold space outside of the Brooklyn Center Police Department, crowds of protesters were met with tear gas, rubber bullet rounds, and other forms of police brutality. In an homage to that spring of 2021, Morrison reflects on the time spent making evening trips to the memorial and police department as the city descended into a state sanctioned sundown town.
lyrics
Insurrectionists, exes and white supremacists
I’m fresher than death certificates waiting for penmanship.
It’s off the top, since they comin’ off the hip
I’m newer than the Black friends you met since May 26th
Cognitive dissonance
Like the last level of Enter the Dragon, you fightin’ your reflection,
there’s no winnin’ when the price of admission is your perception of innocence,
the mayor’s makin’ 6-figures, it already figures in.
They pimpin’, Pimpin’. The system is vicious.
They use the word “affordable” the same day they make a lynchin’
They use our money to pay the cops who kill us,
Then promise to paint gold over the road where they spilled blood
I can’t allow it, all smoke about it,
I put your forest fire out before my city sees a cloud of it
Your fear runs deep. You drown from it.
And deeper when you see us Black and proud of it.
Crowds of us, even outnumbered,
Cos the price of my life weighs less than white comfort
Hit ya peace of mind hotline with 9-1-1,
And I’ma show them boys where the fuck the fire comes from.
Sundown, Lights out
Might not, Come home
Til then, Knives out
Til they, Run home
Sundown, Lights out
Might not, Come home
Til then, Knives out
Til they, Run home
While my guy can’t breathe, I can’t sleep
The sky still weeps, I know your eyes can’t keep
Still. No peace. Still our streets.
Versus school-to-prison pipelines, police and Line 3
Stingrays, home raids, my man define “Free”
If they wanna have it out, they know where to find me
Phone chip, address, license and IP
If they wanna take me out, lord willin’ it’ll be on livestream.
Livestream: no accountability unless the whole world see
And that’s a whole ass stretch for the limbs and reach of Reed Richards
You seen the video, but still don’t get the whole picture?
The soul killers, the cold pillars
Upholdin’ colonial villains wage-thievin’ the whole village
They keep killin’, got you believin’ you’re no different
Than the names they put 6-feet below kitchens
They know the difference, but in court they won’t admit
So they patiently wait for the DA’s no conviction
All immunity, no spirit,
no holds barred, and the union’ll fight to clear’em
They want us to fear them as much as they fear us
They just a badge and a number.
They Jennifer Love-Hewitt,
and I know what they all did last summer.
The feelin’s not mutual. We aint’ the same man
You can’t fake and pretend hatred and revenge
The 3rd precinct in flames in the names of Black men
It’s on film now, so what was they doin’ back then?
It ain’t about what you did. It’s not about what you gon’ do.
It ain’t about who. It’s about what you answer to.
So, if you standin’, I hope you ain’t standin’ still
Tonight we makin’ moves to find out how many weren’t filmed.
Sundown, Lights out
Might not, Come home
Til then, Knives out
Til they, Run home
Sundown, Lights out
Might not, Come home
Til then, Knives out
Til they, Run home

his separated parents, and their respective separated cities, Morrison details a story of being raised by activists in polar opposite environments. His new body of work highlights the dichotomy of Morrison’s upbringing, celebrating a life of music and damn good trouble....more
I have never watched a human being create sound with as much authenticity and contrition as Linden Killam. He and Dr. Wylie are two of my favorite artists, and cannot wait to have them co-produce. Toussaint Morrison
I traveled the country several times over and made the most important mistakes in my life with my first band, The Blend. Some of my most beloved work while here on earth are in these songs. Toussaint Morrison
My producer, soul brother, and best friend; Dr. Wylie is an innovative sound genius that astounds me every time I'm blessed with the opportunity to work with him. Plus, his album is FREE. Toussaint Morrison
